Felsenruhe Geotop

36358 Herbstein, Deutschland

Northwest of Herbstein, on the southern slope of the Kirchwald, lies the Felsenruhe, a cliff up to 8 m high. It begins not far from the Kolping settlement and can be traced a good 300 m in a west-northwest direction. The cliff is a former lava flow, of which today the erosion edge is exposed. The basalt of which the cliff rests is fine-grained and vesicular, interspersed with small olivines and rarely clinopyroxenes. Segregation fractures and tectonic fissures characterize the appearance. On the slope below the cliff, a large sea of boulders has accumulated, characterizing the surrounding forest. The rocky rest surrounded by many a spooky Vogelsberg legend is easily accessible for walkers and hikers. Directly past the natural monument runs the Herbsteiner Extratour ,Felsentour‘ (www.extratouren-vogelsberg.de/html/felsentour.html ), with the parking lot at Kolpingdorf only a few steps away.
