Wilder Stein Geotop

36358 Herbstein, Deutschland

A 5 m high and a good 30 m long rock cliff, called the Wilde Stein, is found in the forest not far from Herbstein-Altenschlirf. It consists of tholeiitic basalt, which is very fine-grained and includes olivines and clinopyroxenes. The fissures are steep to vertical with partly steep south dipping or steep west dipping. The Wilde Stein can be reached from the exit of Altenschlirf in eastern direction via the L 3182, from which one turns after 200 m in southeastern direction. The asphalt path leads after 150 m over a small bridge of the Altefeldbach and the cliff is already reached.
