Fachwerkkirchen Ermenrod & Zeilbach

36325 Feldatal

The old chapel in Ermenrod was demolished in 1705 and replaced by a half-timbered building in the middle of the village, but this building had to be renewed again already in 1735. The building that still exists today (now Martin Luther Church) was built. The church, a rectangular building with a two-story half-timbered construction, has a gable roof with a crippled hip above the entrance side. A slender high hooded ridge turret is attached. The half-timbering is executed with man figures, the struts of which are curved. On the western part, the constructive substructure of the tower is clearly visible. In the interior, the galleries are arranged on three sides. In the galleries, medallions with sayings from the Creed and images of the apostles alternate. The latter, with their strong dark colors, are based on Caravaggio‘s painting style; they originate from the old church. The colorful, richly carved baroque pulpit with figures of Christ and the evangelists stands on a strong turned column on the south wall, which is free of galleries. The pulpit, created by Andreas Wahl from Lauterbach, was also part of the inventory of the previous church. A treasure among the Vogelsberg half-timbered churches is the small church in Zeilbach. It is one of the oldest half-timbered churches in the area. The inscription above the entrance gives information about the year of origin: 1668. When one enters the church for the first time, one is surprised on the one hand by the colorfulness and variety of the interior, but on the other hand also amazed by the vastness that such a small space can convey. The church ceiling is divided into four fields, in which stucco medallions with pelicans, eagles and fruit bunches attract the eye. On the gallery fields, the plant motifs of the construction period were uncovered in 1968 under several layers of paint. The pulpit from 1668 does not appear obtrusive despite its carved herm pilasters on the edges. The small rectangular building with a gable roof and off-center ridge turret is fully shingled today. It is actually a pity, because the continuous half-timbered posts of oak underneath with five evenly spaced transom zones in between are an excellent example of Vogelsberg half-timbered construction.
